The first few weeks of school have been smooth sailing! It's been a pleasure to see all of the new and returning faces. I would like to take this opportunity to explain some of the assessments that teachers are giving students at this time, and in the near future:
- K- 2nd grade students are taking the DIBELS, which stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. This assessment measures the development of early literacy and early reading skills. Students will complete this assessment at the beginning, middle and at the end of the year. With the results of this assessment, teachers will be able to target specific skills students need to develop, such as: letter sound recognition, phonics, and oral reading fluency.
- 3rd -6th grade students will be taking a new assessment called the DEA, which stands for Discovery Education Assessment. The DEA will test the areas of reading and math. The reading and math sections each take about an hour to complete. This assessment will also be given at the beginning, middle and end of the year. The first round of the DEA is scheduled for September 25th and 26th.
Both the DIBELS and DEA will help teachers learn about individual, as well as class strengths
and weaknesses. Teachers will be able to monitor the progress and growth of every student,
and apply interventions when needed. If you have any questions about these assessments,
please feel free to stop by and talk with me, or talk with your child’s teacher.
I hope to see you all at the “Back to School” event on August 30th from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.!
