Join Green Team!

posted Sep 19, 2018, 10:24 AM by Jessie Lawrence

Students and parents are invited to join us in the garden outside the cafeteria on Tuesdays from 3 - 4 p.m. for Green Team! Over the next several weeks, we will get our hands dirty weeding the beds, spreading out the Reunity Resources compost that was made from school lunch composting programs (including ours!), setting up a worm compost system, and prepping the beds for fall/winter. Ruby Lopez from Earthcare runs Green Team, and she will also be providing sustainability education in the 1st and the 2nd grade classrooms this year. Let's dig in the dirt!

Ruby will also be leading the STEM portion of Green Team for 3rd - 6th graders January - March 2019, during which we will be conducting an energy audit and exploring alternative energy ideas to green up the Carlos Gilbert campus. Stay tuned . . .

If you will not be returning to CGE next school year (including 6th graders moving to another SFPS school), you will need to register your child at their new school. Lunchroom Composting Begins 2/28!

posted Mar 1, 2018, 8:20 AM by Jessie Lawrence

CGE Green Team is wrapping up their STEM-based school site investigation from Project Learning Tree on waste reduction and recycling. The team's efforts and findings have contributed to Carlos Gilbert officially joining Santa Fe Public School's lunchroom composting program! This program will be run in partnership with our local, non-profit composting facility, Reunity Resources

Many thanks to Lisa Randal from SFPS's Sustainability Program and Juliana Ciano of Reunity Resources for making this happen at our school.

Lisa and Juliana will be in the lunchroom on Launch Day, February 28th, to help the students and staff with the new process of clearing compostable items from their trays into designated bins. The food scraps will be processed at Reunity Resources' facility into amazing, healthy dirt that students will then use to prepare spring planting beds in the school garden. Full circle!
